๐ธ Springtime magic in the Netherlands: 3 things you simply can't miss
Pack your trench coatโ it's that time of year when the Dutch countryside transforms into a living canvas. Tulip season. Cherry blossoms flutter on the breeze, wild poppies burst from unexpected corners, and of course โ tulips steal the show. But these famed blooms are fleeting, gracing us with their glory for just a few precious weeks in April.
If you find yourself in the Netherlands this spring (and you absolutely should), here's how to savor it, slow-travel style:
๐ฒ 1. Chase the tulips by bike
The northern fields come alive in April, offering row upon row of vibrant tulips. The best way to experience them? Rent a bike and set your own pace. While you could drive, cycling lets you stop whenever a breathtaking view demands your attention โ and trust me, that will happen often.
Insider tip: Keep in mind the fields are spread out, so walking isn't ideal. Plan a loop by bike or car, and don't forget to pack snacks (stroopwafels highly recommended, preferably fresh from a local market still warm enough to melt the caramel inside).
๐ท 2. Lose yourself in Keukenhof
If flowers make your heart skip a beat, Keukenhof Gardens is a must. Open only in spring, it's a floral wonderland where over seven million blooms create colorful, fragrant displays. It's touristy, yes โ but in a way that still feels magical, especially if you arrive early or linger toward closing time.
Between us: Bring your camera, but don't forget to put it down occasionally. Some moments deserve your full, undivided attention.
๐ 3. Don't miss the Bloemencorso (Flower Parade)
On the second Saturday of April, the Netherlands hosts its most beloved flower parade โ a 42-kilometer procession of flower-laden floats and marching bands. Over a million people line the route, but it's worth weaving into your tulip adventure for a joyous, local celebration of Dutch creativity and springtime splendor.
The scoop: Find a spot in one of the smaller towns along the route rather than the major cities. You'll have a better view, and might just end up chatting with locals who've been attending since childhood and can tell you which float is this year's dark horse.
